Kelly returns to the big screen as a grown-up version of the Santa-obsessed character he played in 2003

It has been 13 years since Brett Kelly of Surrey, B.C. played Thurman Murman, the doughy kid who shared the screen with a drunken, foul-mouthed character played by Billy Bob Thornton in Bad Santa.
In the sequel, which comes out in November, Kelly plays an adult version of Murman.
Murman looks just like he did as an eight year old, right down to the curly orange hair and chubby cheeks.
Getting the look just right wasn’t easy because Kelly, now 22, has grown up and slimmed down.
The movie was filmed in Montreal and Kelly had to make frequent trips to the city’s smoked meat delis so that he could regain Murman’s body type.
«I put on about 40 to 50 pounds and if there’s ever a city where you can completely just totally disregard your health, Montreal is probably the place to do it,» he laughed.
Looking like Thurman
Once the pounds were in place, the rest of Kelly’s appearance underwent a transformation.

«The real moment where it all clicked was when we started doing all the hair and makeup and wardrobe and stuff,» he said.
«Once we got the whole schtick back together, it really snapped back together.»
Still raunchy
If the trailer is any indication (there are 11 f-bombs in less than two minutes) Bad Santa 2 will be just as raunchy as the original.
Thornton and Tony Cox once again play crude con men who dress up like Santa and an elf as part of a criminal scheme.

«It’s very similar to the first one, tone-wise,» Kelly said.
Academy Award winner Kathy Bates joins the cast this time around as Thornton’s mother.
«We had one day where we were on set, and it was Billy Bob, Kathy Bates, Octavia Spencer and me,» he laughed. «It was one of those, one of these things is not like the other moments, and I thought, I’m pretty lucky to be here.»
Life in Surrey
Kelly took a break from acting after he graduated from high school so that he could focus on getting his degree from UBC.

Now that he has his diploma, he’s writing scripts and hopes to land more roles.
«The timing couldn’t have worked out any better,» he said.
«Regardless of whether Bad Santa 2 was going to happen, I planned on getting back into it and heading down to Los Angeles, but it fell right into my lap.»

Kelly Gained Weight For Bad Santa 2
The former child actor, who keeps his personal life under the radar didn’t follow any trend to flaunt or impress dramatic weight loss transformation. Brett, however, like fellow Hollywood icon Jonah Hills, actually gained weight when he reprised his role for Bad Santa 2.
The first time he appeared in the film in 2008, Kelly was only eight years old. And when he returned to the film’s sequence in 2016, the actor was 23. And, in between the period, as puberty hit him, he grew up perfectly fine. He was neither too slim nor overweight.

Matter of fact, it was in 2016, when the Young Artist nominee had just completed his Bachelor exams, he received the call from the Bad Santa team. The alum of the University of British Columbia accepted the offer to do film alongside Billy Bob Thorton, of course.
But, the only least likable thing about the contract was that it implied he had to gain a heavyweight too.
Roles in movies
Making his acting debut as a Kid in the 2001 movie “Kill Me Later”, Brett’s next role came in the same year, when he was cast to play Toby in “Out Cold”, followed by his role as Sammy in “Cheats” in 2002.
In the following year, Brett portrayed The Kid in “Bad Santa”, also starring Billy Bob Thornton, Lauren Graham and Bernie Mac – this comedy crime drama had 12 award nominations and won one, while Brett’s performance brought him a nomination for Las Vegas Film Critics Society Award-Youth in Film, and he won Phoenix Film Critics Society (PFCS) Award for Best Performance by a Youth in a Lead or Supporting Role – Male, in 2004.

Brett Put On 55 Pounds

This was, however, not the first time, Kelly had to experience something similar for a film as he previously had to eat 30 chocolate bars in a night for Trick ‘r Treat, the movie that made him hate chocolates.
As easy peasy, it was to gain weight, the struggle only came when he had to get rid of them as soon as the filming was done. It, in fact, took him 8 months to farewell the weight. Thankfully, Bad Santa’s producers helped him by offering a personal trainer.

А вот и нет, не всё. Фильм, во-первых, для взрослых, во-вторых, для
взрослых, которые уже больше не могут пялиться в новогодний ящик, где на
всех кнопках одна и та же фанера с одними и теми же филипками и их
натужными филиппиками, в-третьих, фильм, как ни странно, хороший, не
смотри что голливудский, местами даже смешной и — главное — не
страдающий политической корректностью. Чудеса да и только! Видимо, дело
в том, что Рождество без чудес не бывает, или в том, что идея картины
принадлежит братьям Коэнам, или опять же в заросшем сивой щетиной Билли
Бобе, не пожелавшем скрыть под красным замызганным пальто сказочного
(боевикового, комического, какого угодно — но сказочного) своего
персонажа живого страдающего человека. Отчего и сам Билли Боб, и «Плохой
Санта» в целом и потешают, и утешают душу стосковавшегося в
телевизионных брызгах шампанского зрителя.
Посмотрите. Во всяком случае, я ничего лучшего за весь этот невесть
зачем на нас свалившийся десятидневный отпуск не видел.

Brett Kelly: The Bad Santa kid 10 years later

Christmas is a special time for 20-year-old Surrey actor Brett Kelly. After all, he starred in Bad Santa, the 2003 Christmas comedy that has become something of a cult classic.
GUILDFORD — Not many people can say they’ve worked with someone as talented as Billy Bob Thornton, but Surrey actor Brett Kelly can – and he was only eight years old.
Kelly’s claim to fame is his role in the 2003 anti-Christmas comedy Bad Santa, starring Thornton as Willie, a hard-drinking, foul-mouthed mall Santa, with Tony Cox as Marcus, his elfish sidekick. Now at its 10th anniversary, the film has become something of a cult Christmas classic.
“Filming Bad Santa was really where I learned everything that I knew at that point about movies,” said Kelly, now 20. “That was really the first big thing that I had done.”
In the movie, Willie and Marcus spread half-assed holiday cheer at an Arizona shopping mall until it closes on Christmas Eve, at which point they rob the place blind and lay low for the next 11 months.
Kelly portrayed Thurman Merman, a lovable third-grade loser who befriends Willie. Merman’s kindness even prompts the selfish, surly Willie to think of someone else for once by the end of the 90-minute comedy.
While Kelly doesn’t remember much from filming the movie, he does recall the first impression he got from reading the R-rated script.
“I was running lines with my dad because I had to go for my first audition,” he said. “The first time he said a line like, ‘What the F are you doing?’ I just couldn’t stop laughing, I couldn’t read my lines, I was just rolling around on the ground laughing.
“I’d heard my parents swear before that a little bit, but not sustained like that. We all found it pretty funny.”
Kelly said he frequently gets asked about hearing so many F-bombs at such a young age, but added that the coarse language didn’t affect him much.
“I’m probably fairly disturbed from the movie, I just haven’t realized it yet,” he said with a laugh.
Bad Santa may be a must-see for some every holiday, but Kelly said he hasn’t watched the movie in five or six years.
“In the first few years, I’d seen it so many times already,” he said. “Plus. I don’t really like watching myself – it isn’t necessarily one of my favourite things to do.”
While filming the movie was surreal, Kelly said its longevity caught a lot of people off guard.
“I don’t think anyone on the set really had any expectations for what it’s kind of become, where people are always talking about it every Christmas and you always see it on TV every year,” he said. “For it to turn out the way it has has been a pleasant surprise.”
Since his last role working alongside Adrien Brody in the 2010 stoner comedy High School, Kelly has taken a break from the silver screen to pursue a degree from UBC’s Sauder School of Business, though he’d like to get back into acting once he graduates.
And if the rumours are true, there could be a sequel to his big break from 10 years ago.
“I’ve heard some rumblings all over the internet with Billy talking, but I haven’t heard anything for sure,” he said. “I’d definitely be interested.”
